Isle of Wight Steam Railway

We share our island village with the main station on the island heritage railway, and so when they need some skilled work performed, we are always pleased to help them out.  On this occasion, the need was to construct the foundations for a new station building at the Wootton end of the line.

The proposed new building consists of an oak framed heritage building to be built on to a concrete foundation set at platform level. The railways own team of craftsmen are designing and making the oak frame in their workshops, extending their skill base and keeping the work local.   As this building was already drawn up, the concrete foundations had to be inch perfect ready for the oak frame to sit upon it.

Using our latest technology to ensure the levels were correct and the platform heights perfectly aligned, we undertook the excavation, steel reinforcement and shuttering prior to pouring the concrete walls and fixing the precast concrete decking that underpins the platform .   The tight working space, and proximity to the live railway, required careful management. It was decided to bring in a concrete pump with a long boom thereby maintaining a safe distance between us and the railway and its passengers.

The work was completed in just over 4 weeks leaving the concrete foundations all ready for the arrival of the new oak framed building.
